What makes an athlete? Who is an athlete? I’m fairly certain that I’ve never really considered myself an athlete in any type. I played sports in high school. I was captain of the swim team and even president of the Girls Athletic Association but I don’t think I would have ever been comfortable calling myself an athlete.
I looked up the definition of an athlete on the googles. Pretty straight forward, a person who is proficient in sports and other forms of physical exercise. Hummmm….so am I an athlete!
I’m so excited to be teaming up with Under Armour for the third round of their What’s Beautiful Campaign. If you aren’t familiar it’s a competition aimed at redefining the female athlete. The first change I will be making as my part in this program is adding the word athlete to how I describe myself! With endless 5k’s, 10k’s and 4 half marathons under my belt. I think it’s safe to say I need to start my redefining myself as a female athlete and I’m sure many of you do as well.
The What’s Beautiful competition is about encouraging and empowering women to set goals and achieve them. Helping to redefine the female athlete in the process. It’s not just about people who play organized professional sports but realizing that every woman whether training for marathon or trying their first yoga class is an athlete.
How would you describe What’s Beautiful? I say beautiful is Overcoming Fear! Getting scared but having the guts to push on and accomplish your fitness goals. As women we seem to allow the fear of the unknown to keep us from getting out and taking on new fitness classes and goals. I say overcoming fear is what makes female athlete’s beautiful.
I remember the first 5k I ever ran I was soooo scared. I wasn’t a runner. I had just had a baby and was determined to take the weight off. Standing at the start line with my belly in knots. I will never forget how scared I was. Everyone else knew what they were doing! The top photo below is me in the pink at the very left of the screen in one of my first 5k’s. If you didn’t know better I look like a runner, I look like an athlete. Scared or not I set a goal and achieved it. I finished that race!
The other photo’s are after other “firsts” in my fitness journey. My first time running the 10 mile mountain goat, my first 4 miler and my first time tubing down hill with my then infant oldest son. All these firsts were about over coming fear and trying something new.
And this isn’t just about goals, it’s about starting a movement. As an ambassador for Fitfluential there are 300 of us involved in this What’s Beautiful Program. There are so many amazing women involved! I’ve already been so inspired by the stories of what is beautiful and what makes an athlete. If you are looking for some encouragement to reach your goals there isn’t a better place to find support and comradery.
So how does this whole competition work? Simple join the movement, sign up, and set a goal for the 8 week program. You don’t need to live in a certain area or even know me. You just need to make a goal large or small and accomplish it. There are people to give you props and places to track your progress!
My goals are to ROCK my first P90X program and in the process PR my Warrior Dash in August! Do my goals scare me…of COURSE! If your dreams don’t scare you, you aren’t thinking big enough! Join me, set a goal and let’s accomplish it together! Running a PR? Completing your first Iron Girl? Trying out a new yoga class? Getting stronger? Working out 5 times a week? Set your goal and let’s get it done!
Want to go the extra mile? Join my team! I’ve started a team called Scary Beautiful. Nothing says over coming your fitness fears like being scared and accomplishing the goals anyway! Are you trying some fitness firsts this summer, join up and turn your I wants into #IWILL with the help of a supportive team! BE BRAVE, BE FUN, BE CRAZY…but let’s not be scared!
Did I mention yet there are prizes for this competition? How about a fabulous trip? You can win a trip to the Armour retreat in Costa Rica!
I’m a huge fan of Under Armour to begin with you may remember checking out my fitness closet that is full of their products. And this campaign is a reminder of the great things we can do when we accomplish goals together. I’m proud to be working on this campaign with Under Armour and Fitfluential and hope you will join me too!
Question of the Day: What are your goals?
