When things aren’t working out, I’ve always found that trying something new is a good way to bust out of a rut. This week I made a vow to get to a barre class. I’ve watched through my instagram stream as folks sing the praises of these ballerina inspired workouts. And oh boys this little bar packs a punch!
I took my first barre class at least 4 years ago but only went once and never made it back. That was a mistake on my part. And since 4 years seems like 100 years ago ( getting old sucks!) I couldn’t remember exactly what the class was going to be like.
I signed up for this barre class at my current hot spot Sky Yoga & Wellness in Skaneateles. Adina instructed us through 45 minutes of pure shaky torture. It was low intensity but packed a CRAZY great workout.
My hips and inner thighs were actually shaking so badly at one point I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to go on. I’ve always been pretty strong so to find a class that can make me sweat and shake without crazy amounts of cardio is BIG win in my book. I loved the low impact, big impact it had on my body. I think Barre is a class for me!
The music was fun and upbeat and even though I kinda wished my legs would fall off for most of the class, it was nice to be challenged to the point of crying. It’s been a while since I’ve honestly considered stopping during a class. Thanks Barre you win the day!
I can’t wait to get back to another class, I’ve been looking for something that pushes me out of my comfort zone. And who knew squeezing a ball in between your legs while squatting could make you avoid stairs the entire day after.
What I truly loved about this class is how it challenged me, I’m always looking for a new way to get back into feeling like my old self in my body. It even forced me to use my latest fitness and life Mantra “Let Me Be Strong!” I think this class could be a great way to send some focus to parts of my body that are currently screaming for some attention. Glutes, Hamstrings, Hips and Core are where I’m currently feeling a little blah and this class left each of those areas feeling the burn. Quite literally my legs were on FIRE for most of the class.
Since I was never a dancer it was also fun to learn all the foot positions and fancy terms for movements. I was no Misty Copeland at the bar but WOW I have a new respect for her. I could barely handle 45 minutes at the bar and she is spending full days. I probably appeared more like Black Swan than anything else, and I mean in that crazed Natalie Portman lunatic way.
Barre also gave me the perfect opportunity to rock my new outfit from Ellie. Maybe one of these days I’ll take a picture of me actually in the outfit…priorities ya know? Workouts or photos…I never seem to have time for both these days.
And so be prepared to hear a lot more about Barre classes from me over the next few weeks.
Question of the Day: Have you taken Barre Classes?
