Holy Northeast heat wave! It is 90+ degrees out today. Knowing the glorious heat and humidity was coming I opted for a relaxing yoga DVD this morning as my workout.
45 minutes of core with Rodney Yee was plenty enough to make me sweat and reflect on the day. I always hate the end of summer, since it reminds me of about 400000000 things I forgot to do over the long break. This summer one item high on my list was go strawberry picking. Naturally it would be a little late for this type of activity but I am lucky to live near Strawberry Fields which is a hydroponic strawberry farm! Perfect! I decided in the middle of a sun salutation TODAY was the day to go picking.
After a morning of errands and park play I dragged my youngest along for the adventure.
How good do these look? The other nice thing about this particular farm is there is very little bending a stooping involved. The strawberries grow from about calf to shoulder height!
B was ready to snip off some berries. That’s his determined face!
At strawberry fields you trim your own strawberries with scissors. B picked out some cool tiger ones. Sadly it took us a few tries to understand we were ONLY cutting red juicy berries! He was partial to the green ones.
After a while we got the hang of it, and picked a pound and a half of sweet delicious berries. I love fresh berries. Eating them at home still warm from the summer/fall sun is special treat. And one I have missed out on all summer long! They are open until October and I’m already planning another trip.
Check out this double heart berry!
Instead of just eating them ALL right out of the bag….I decided I might need to create a meal out of at least a few of them! I’m participating this month in powercakes #powerbowl challenge and knew fresh berries would make for a killer salad.
Some lettuce, avocado, shredded chicken, sliced fresh strawberries and chia seeds, later I enjoyed this amazing summer salad. As usual, I made my usual Garlic Salad Dressing. Only instead of raspberries I substituted strawberries. It was healthy heaven!
Now to find a crazy delicious dinner option with Strawberries. I’m thinking a glaze for chicken? More on that later!
