I love social media, I’m pretty sure that’s obvious if you follow me on any of my many and sometimes ridiculous amounts of social media accounts you probably already know that. I have a Rebel Mouse account just in case it gets crazy big I know already how to use it. I was one of the first 2% of users on instagram and I had some high hopes for the now ill-fated Buzzy.
What can I say I love the power of the medium. I like people. I like to share, meet, and discuss with folks on a bazzilion different topics. I’m a nerd by trade, I like to know how things work. And I ask a lot of questions. Both lend themselves well to social media.
Social Media didn’t exist in its current form when I went to college. I guess you could say I had a blog back then though if you count my geosite (yeah who remembers those?) that just showed off my dreams of becoming the next great Katie Couric. It also highlighted the fact I tried to wrestle, that humor was lost on some. But I didn’t get the chance to take a class about how this social media/blogging works so everything you see has been a bit of trial by fire, meets jack of all traits.
To me it’s amazing to see the growth and evolving world or social media. Especially when it has to do with business. During the day other than just this blog, I also run my own digital agency. I handle business social media streams and strategies. Leveraging social media for business is an important part of my life. But anyone who has ever worked in it and with it before knows there is A LOT to it.
Some people think you just open an account and people flock but that’s not really the case. Getting people from their computers to make your cash register ring takes some skills, lots of research, and spreadsheets.
Soooooo why am I telling you all of this? Because yesterday morning I got the opportunity to see some local sporting teams using social media. It was my first time attending a Social Media Breakfast! Please note in above photo I’m not wearing sneakers! Those are heals baby!
It was a great chance to hear how others are doing social media for business and brought together a great group of folks from Syracuse! We heard from the Syracuse Crunch, Syracuse Chiefs and SU Athletics. I was also excited to get to catch up with a bunch of people who I don’t see in person as often as I should.
- Hashtags are HUGE, make them unique and own them
- Facebook pictures are great for interaction
- Some people don’t fully understand Pinterest copywrite rules
- #HHH is a big SU LAX thing – who knew? Not me, now I do.
- Dunkin Donuts coffee ROCKS
- @Cuse is run by lots of interns (which explains to me, some recent blunders)
- The Crunch launched a partners feed to give publicity to sponsors (I like It)
- Big discounts, giveaways and unique content keep fans happy
- Instagram isn’t heavily used although the accounts exist
After filling my brain with knowledge all morning, and some client work in the afternoon. I went back to the place I wasn’t sure I would go again:
I’ve got chlorine fever! I knew I would get it just by putting my toe back in the water.
The swim I broke out like this:
500 Meter Warm Up – Flip Turns
Rest a minute
200 Meter moderate pace – some open and flip turns
300 Meter (first 100 moderate, second 100 slower, third 100 FAST)
Rest a minute or two
500 Meter swim – flip turns
50 meter moderate
50 meter cool down (breast stroke)
I was pretty crunched for time and there was a group training session going on so the lanes weren’t as open as I was hoping. But it was a pretty good little work out. Now I’m on a mission to get a swim cap. I’ve always hated them, but it might be time to get one. My ponytail was not cooperating, and just to save on the nuisance of my hair, I’m going to need to break down and wear one.
