I’m feeling pretty great today!! Did you see my team won!!! Look out Philly!
Last night I stayed awake for 2 overtime(s) on top of regular play to watch my team win! It was a super late night and worth it GO DEVILS!
Whether we like to admit it or not most of us don’t get enough sleep and I am as guilty as the next. I would love to say that it’s very necessary and I make it a priority but that would be a big lie. Sleep always seems to get the short end of the stick. If I am asleep by midnight it’s a good night! I have “trained” my body to function on 5-6 hours of sleep and it’s beginning to show. As much as I would like to say that’s a good amount for me it’s not. 8-9 hours of sleep is ideal for a properly functioning body and increased sleep can even help with weight loss. I need this shirt as a reminder:
For me it’s a matter of getting everything I need to get done, complete before the next day. I loved when my boys were little and still napped. Those two afternoon hours on Saturday & Sunday were amazing! I could workout, cook, clean and even sneak in an episode or two of DVR’ed Bravo Reality Shows (I’m addicted I’ll admit it I blame Bethenny). And sometimes I could even nap then too! I am missing those afternoon naps more than I could have imagined!
Now I find myself sneaking in workouts after dinner which are keeping me up longer. Not being able to really unplug, sometimes I want to throw my phone away, ok most days! Don’t send me work texts at 8pm I’m not answering and it just irritates me. Then I get anxiety about trying to keep clear boundaries of home time vs. work time, maybe I should answer? Maybe that would make me a better employee? No you are not paid outside of 8 hours it’s family time this can wait till tomorrow? (Does anyone else have this internal struggle besides me?)
Sleep is wonderful tool and an important part of healthy-living. Can you image only eating lettuce every day of course not! Eating a variety of healthy foods is a PART of healthy living. And sleep needs be given the same importance as exercising and eating. This is my goal for MAY get more SLEEP! Take a nap on the weekend if I need it, go to bed earlier make it a priority!
Last Night after the thrill of victory I tried these simple steps to get a better nights sleep, albeit still not 8-9 hours- but baby steps!
- I shut my phone OFF- gasp! Yes I shut it completely off. I wasn’t tempted once to reach over and check a twitter feed or e-mail. What did people do before these silly devices?
- Then I shut the TV off in our bedroom! My husband sleeps with a TV on and always has something about having 5 children in his house growing up he isn’t good with quiet.
- Then I tried these two yoga stretches which can easily be done on the floor next to a wall or on your bed if it is against a wall.
You can feel this stretch throughout your hips and lightly in your back. Be sure to do both the left side and right side holding for 1 -2 minutes.
My Favorite pose: Legs up on a wall
As a runner I never seem to be able to stretch out my legs enough and this pose is sure to take the tension out of your hamstrings! You get a great tingle as the blood escapes your feet. I will hold this for 3 minutes, eyes closed relaxed and feel like a new person afterwords. You can also bring your knees into your chest for variation.
Do you get enough sleep? Do you stretch before you sleep?
Bonus question: Where is your Cell Phone when you are asleep?
