Ugh so let’s talk about this “race”. I love this run. It’s a holiday themed run and people really have fun with it. It’s great cause for the Arthritis Association. Normally I would be gushing about how fantastic it was, but this year NOT so much!
I was pumped this “was” going to be my last 5k of the year to get a PR and call 2013 closed for races and get ready for 2014!
Sadly this race just went strangely wrong. I arrived early got my packet and found my friends Amanda and Tom (aren’t they cute!)! We did photo ops, helped others get photos and people watched for a hot second. I had never been to SRC arena before, it’s a great place for race pick ups. Easy in, easy out, lots of parking and the center in sunken down so if you need to find someone it makes for easy scouting!
The weather sadly was taking a turn for the worse. Earlier in the week it promised 60 degrees and sun. Unfortunately that turned into 55 degrees with wind and rain. No biggie, I’m not sugar I won’t melt.
The arena started to clear out about 15 minutes before the race start time of 10:00. Amanda and I made a quick stop at the bathroom and at about 5 of decided to head out and brave the elements at the start line. As we walked out the doors. I saw strollers and walkers just crossing the start line and down the hill what appeared to be runners already running?! SERIOUSLY you start a RACE 5 minutes EARLY???!!! I had no idea what to do, I stood there shocked for a minute like now what? My friends I already knew were walking the race and could care less about time so I was alone.
I sprinted for the course while I fumbled and turned on my GPS. I sprinted after the runners I could see and was forced to navigate rows of walkers and strollers and DOGS? Seriously with the DOGS? It was a HORRIBLE way to start a race. I sprinted until I caught up with the tail end of the runners. About this point it occurred to me I bet my chip didn’t start so now I’m running a gun time race that went off at least 3 minutes before I even got to the course!! PERFECT SO MUCH FOR THAT PR and pacing with people. This began what turned into people passing for the 1st mile. I was using runkeeper to keep pace since I was with all paces of runners at this point.
NOT the start for a 28 minute 5k I was hoping for…and this was all going on in the POURING rain and wind as well.
I calmed my brain down about mile 2 and tried to talk myself out of crying. That wasn’t going to help. I needed to run the race at hand. At this point I ended up walking for a hot second after I re-tied my shoe that came untied, although I did see Michelle from Sugarplumcupcake right about this point! (I’m telling you this is the Murphy’s Law of Runs!)
I’m so irritated about this run…my blood is still boiling. The course was just a big loop you ran twice. I knew that if I could keep my wits about me, I would be fine. The second time around the rain was coming down even harder than the first lap. At mile 3 you could see the gun time which clearly already said 31 something I sprinted to the end…HOPING by some miracle I MIGHT get a net time. Sadly NO I got a straight up gun time AND net time of 32.10 meanwhile my GPS which I stopped after I crossed the finish line shows 29.20.
It’s not official but I’m calling this my sub 30 5k PR. I have NO doubt that had I gotten a net time or been at the start line say, when the race started at 10:00 NOT 9:55! I would have had a time close to this and maybe would have been able to pace myself. I know this sounds like I’m whinny and trust me I am. I’m just mad I spent money on a race for the purpose of PR-ing that went so horribly wrong, when the run itself wasn’t the issue.
I only run races to get official times, I can’t afford to run races just to run them anymore. So for this race to start 5 minutes early without notifying anyone just pisses me off! There were other runners who were still in the arena when I walked out so I feel bad for them as well, since I KNOW I wasn’t the only person caught off guard by it. SECOND if you are going to start early MAYBE announce it? (was there an announcement? I know the weather was bad but COME ON!)
I will say the long sleeved t-shirt from the race was cute. And I’m hoping they have better weather for next years run. I would say about the time this photo was being taken the race was starting!
If anyone knows of any good 5k’s between now and the end of the year I would love some local suggestions to get my OFFICIAL PR time.
Why would a race start early? Some of us plan out to the minute when to get to the line (especially for these smaller races!), starting it early is just CRAP as far as I’m concerned! I try not be negative here, I really do, but I’m heartbroken my time doesn’t reflect the race I ran.
Question of the day: Do you like themed runs?
