This is our families second year planting a veggie garden. Last year was a lot of trial by fire. We bought what we thought we would eat and waited for the magic to happen shortly after planting the seeds. This year with one year of “professional” backyard gardening under our belts we set out to create the garden of our dreams. Or at least a better version of a garden than last years first attempt!
Gardening projects are great for families as a way to build something together. It also is a perfect way to teach your little ones where good food comes from. There is something about the memory of picking fresh peas and eating them straight out of the garden that I will never forget and I hope to give my kids those same memories!
Planting a backyard garden is easier than you might think, The Miracle-Gro project is working to help take people from green to green thumbs! I’m on board. Here are my second year tips for those who are new to gardening.
Tips for planting your backyard garden:
1. Pick your garden area. Measure it out. Make a plan for what you would like to grow.
2. Purchase your seeds. Once you have purchased seeds for your garden. Read the back of the package and take note of the planting instructions. Some plants need more room than others.
3. Measure out your row BEFORE YOU PLANT!
We rope ours off with markers and string at each end to keep animals and our children out 😉
4. FERTILIZE THE SOIL.
This is an important step that we skipped last year. This year I’m taking NO chances and went with the Shake n’ Feed Moisture Control All Purpose Plant Food option. It came highly recommended and was easy to use.
5. Plant your rows and water.
This is how my garden looks and what we planted.
6. Weed Often.
Keep out those pesky weeds out and make weeding the garden a fun family adventure!
7. Enjoy the Harvest!
Find great recipes and enjoy eating fresh from the garden! Food always tastes better when it’s fresh!
