I’m not a true believer in natural running or running without music. I know all the greats swear by it. And I have my moments when I like a great run without music to clear my head and forget about timing and pace. But those moments are usually in the summer on a beautiful sunny day. And since it’s February in Central New York I’m not getting many of those. Instead I have found myself in a music rut.
My iphone sells me out and shows my last run mix I created myself was in September 2012….yeah that’s almost 6 months old now. It might be time for some new jams? I’ve started listing to Pandora for music ideas. And my brain was baffled to learn that a certain Taylor Swift song although horrible listening, I can actually run too. How is this possible? And that is my issue with music. Sometimes songs I LOVE I add to my playlist only to find they are impossible to run to. They either destroy my momentum or instantly make me want to skip.
In my Pandora sampling this week a old-ish country song came on about dying young…and I’m finding myself holding back tears on the treadmill. Now come ON the only tears I want to be shedding on the treadmill are tears of joyous sweat. This is my one beef with Pandora sometimes, it throws you a curve ball to see if you’re paying attention. Also how does a country song end up on a pop fitness channel? Strange.
My husband loves to make me playlists based on his musical preference. And while sometimes I dig it, and I totally appreciate him spending time on it. Other times I feel like I need a round of anger management after listening to it.
Last night during my run Pandora found me these treasures:
So in the spirit of a new run mix and the tunes that will be going along with it, here is what I crafted for myself:
I stayed very far from my usual adult alternative sound. And this mix is a LOT more poppy than usually for me, but it’s moving my feet so I’m using it! Go with your gut right? I’m rocking like a 16-year-old girl and I’m not afraid to show it
What songs are moving your feet this week? I would love to hear suggestions!

I just made a new playlist too! Its a variety of music, and I may or may not appear to be a teenage girl
I think right now my go to song is Spectrum by Florence & The Machine….something about it keeps me going!
Ha! It’s fun to be a little young and silly! Even if it’s just music wise.
A recent favorite workout song is Scream & Shout. I even made a Pandora station.
I like that song too! I just don’t know why….ok it’s because the 17 year old in my is a HUGE Britney fan

I’m glad you posted these. I really need to update my music. Thanks for sharing!
Theresa
Thanks Theresa! Music is always hard for me, so I’m more than happy to share.
I have the Calvin Harris song in my running list as well. My buddy going for a personal trainer certification showed me these hour long trance podcasts that are pretty good for running as well. I think it was called United States of Trance or something like that.
