June 5th is National Running Day! And who doesn’t love a holiday all about fitness?!
I rocked my P90X class this morning which was TOUGH. We did ladders that made me want to cry in pain. Then it was time to clock 2 miles for National Running Day. They were not fast but they were miles!
Running for me has always been how I measure my fitness. I have my staple home route that is always a measure for how strong I’m feeling. Lately I’ve been crushing that course. If you had asked the 2006 Reneé how she felt about running she would have laughed in your face. Girlfriend doesn’t run. Sure once in a while she would take off down the parkway near our house at the time and crank out a mile. But that was it.
Or if someone was chasing me.
After having my first little boy something changed. I got a jogging stroller and quickly learned my little baby boy loved our run/walks. I liked them too. There was a lot of stress that came with him but running kept me sane and helped me loose a lot of the weight I had gained.
It was our special time together. As he got bigger we had time to chat about the colors we saw. The pets we passed. And he loved to count things as we cruised by them. It was out bonding time, just us and nature.
Then we became pregnant with our second baby…and I kept right on running. Granted I wasn’t the fastest but I enjoyed the feeling. I liked to be able to hear nature and have some quiet clam time. Running gave me that. My mother always joked that my second son was going to come out wearing a track suit (he didn’t!). But it was the “running” joke. Haha nice pun?
Who knew the pregnant lady at a Halloween run wasn’t dressed up at all? I love this picture of “us” just 8 short weeks before we met him.
Running while pregnant was it’s own challenge but I still enjoyed the time. I must have had youth on my side back then because in those days I would take the jogger with R and was VERY pregnant with B and would still crank out four miles like nothing. Now that they are bigger I cringe thinking about have to push both of them in the jogger for more than a few miles. Granted they are much bigger today then they were then!
Now as my oldest turns SIX—WHAT ?! Where did 6 years go? I get to share a different love of running with him, his own. He was sooo proud to come home from school and tell me he was one of the fastest runners in his class. They had races and he came in second overall! And trust me I can attest the boy is speedy! It’s fun now to be able to let him run on the trail with me. After all those miles together when it was just him and I, I’m happy to know he enjoyed them as much as I did.
Running has helped me find myself, get to know myself and continue to challenge myself. It gave me time with my boys, and continues to give me that. If you had told 2006 Reneé one day you will be running half marathons, she probably would have laughed in your face, then told you about some celebrity gossip. Ok so the second part of that would still happen today. 😉
Thanks running, I wouldn’t be the same without you!
Question of the Day: Are you a runner? What is your favorite thing (s) about running? Did you run today?
