Last night we had the honor of attending a VIP event for the opening of a new restaurant pub at Destiny USA called Gordon-Biersch Brewery Restaurant.
It’s been a while since my husband and I have been out on the town without kids so I was especially looking forward to a few beers and food with friends. Our friends Adam and Jen were also game. It became a double date night! I can not say enough wonderful things about last night, it’s always a rare treat to get out and have some laughs with great friends. And last night will be one we talk about for years to come! I’m sure of it!
The entire night wasn’t just special because of friends. But also because all proceeds from the night were going to fund the Food Bank of Central New York! A great cause and another fabulous non-profit doing great work in our community.
After checking in and finding a great table in the back, we settled in for our fun evening! The staff was amazing and really knowledgable about the variety of beers and food they were serving. Mind you this restaurant hasn’t opened yet to the public and the staff already had their own favorites! It was great to see the passion they had for the restaurant.
Gordon-Biersch adheres to the Reinheitsgebot, The German Purity Law dating back to 1516 which mandates beer can only be made with three, YES 3, ingredients: Barley, hops and water! They brew all beer on site which is also quite and undertaking! You can learn more about the brew process by watching this video…it’s interesting to learn how different they are from other breweries.
The 5 brewery beer options last night were:
- Golden Export, Hefeweizen, Czech Pilsner (my Czech husband’s favorite!), Märzen, and Schwarzbier.
Jen and I started off the evening with a Hefeweizen which ended up being my favorite! Adam’s drink the dark one in the back was the Schwarzbier and my husband started with a Golden Export. And after a cheers of all our beers the food started to come from the kitchen!
Have I mentioned yet we had the most amazing table? We could see everything right as it came out of the kitchen. The food is California inspired and was as filling, as it was delicious. Our favorite must try’s were the calamari (cooked perfectly!) and the artichokes appetizer! Everything was perfect right down to the themed cookies that a local bakery (acookieforeveryseason) created especially for the restaurant!
There was something for everyone on the abundant menu including vegetarian and gluten-free options. From salads to seafood, everything was fresh and fabulous!
The bar was a delightful mix of music, spirits, laughs and of course Syracuse Basketball! Cuse pulled out the win last night with 108 points which will always put smiles on the faces of Central New Yorker’s! The bottom photo of the TV’s didn’t come out the best but that’s the final score. The crowd was fantastic, a perfect mix of community. We even had the opportunity to meet some twitter friends who prior to last night I had never met in real life! Meeting friends from social media is always a little like a first date, you’re excited and nervous and happy all at once. I think my husband was a bit overwhelmed by that experience and most of the night just kept asking me “how do these people know you”?
The atmosphere of the restaurant is remarkable, the lighting and the colors all make you feel miles away from the mall that surrounds it. Gordon Biersch Brewery restaurant is one you need to put on your MUST try list when visiting DestinyUSA. They open to the public on Monday December 10th and if you need a break from the boredom of holiday shopping, check them out!
You would think our evening ends there but it the most exciting part happened right as we were getting ready to leave. The restaurant was starting to clear out when I looked across the restaurant and noticed what appeared to be Former NYS Gov. David Patterson. After having my friends verify that I wasn’t seeing things, and it was either him or Fred Amistad in full dress up, we went over for a photo opp! Sorry but ever since that famous SNL skit that’s the first thing I think of when I see him.
Also bonus points to the person who can tell me why my husband’s tongue is out?! He said he didn’t want to get in the picture and yet hummm……there he is?
It was an incredible evening for a great cause kudos to all involved in making this evening as wonderful as it was! If you’re in the Central New York area be sure to check out the brewery located in the new wing of DestinyUSA (formerly Carousel Center). Gordon Biersch officially opens tomorrow December 10th 2012, make your reservations and bring your friends you won’t be disappointed! Be sure to visit their website www.GordonBierschrestaurants.com
Since we’ve been going strong since 7am with hockey, I’m thinking that this tired hockey mom is going to curl up on the couch for a Sunday Funday! Of course there is a 4 mile run on the agenda for the day too, we’ll see who wins my eyelids or my legs. Workout or Couch?
