** CuseFIT2013 is a series of posts created to highlight fitness classes and offerings in and around Syracuse, NY. It is designed to give you my impressions and tips as a first timer at various classes. My hope is that by removing the unknowns about new classes you will feel more comfortable and confident moving classes from your “want to try list” to your “completed list.” **
Part One of the CuseFIT series lead me to Lotus Life Yoga Center in Dewitt. Kim Fischer, the owner, and her staff entire facility came highly recommended from some of my most trusted twitter followers. When considering a yoga class I knew this studio was going to be at the top of my list. Kim and I chatted over e-mail and she was more than willing to have me out to try one of her classes.
I have gotten many questions about solar “hot” yoga classes from you my awesome blog readers. Sadly as many of you know my yoga is pretty limited. I just started this fall. And this blog series was the prefect chance to try out a yoga class that I’ve previously been to chicken to try and share it with you!
First fashion or lack there of.
I wore what I considered a great and versatile outfit. Remember I’ve never previously been to this class so I wasn’t 100% sure on the wardrobe. But I knew I wanted to be comfortable. I threw on one of my favorite black t-shirt from the Gap and my new Nux leggings (from PVBODY). Turns out it was a good choice since most people at the class were wearing similar styles.
I arrived in the parking lot and allowed myself about 15 minutes to get some photos and get comfortable. Arriving at least 10 minutes early is suggested.
The space was very tranquil and inviting. Luckily other members of the class has also arrived early and I had a chance to chat with a few of them about the class before it began. They assured me that this was one of their favorite classes of the week. But lovingly warned me the instructor is tough. This didn’t really help ease my nervous mind but they both seemed to enjoy the class tremendously. One woman commented since starting yoga it was “the first time in her life she had abs”! And then I was SOLD. There might be abs waiting for me at the end of this class…kidding/notkidding?
I spread out my mat in main yoga room that was already pretty warm. I have no idea how hot but I needed to immediately remove my running cold gear shirt I had worn in. Some other regulars encouraged me to grab a block and blanket just in case I needed them. I’m VERY happy I grabbed the block since I used it for several positions.
Besides just being “warm” as temperature in, the room, was also extremely inviting. There was a window to the outside at the front of the room, as well as a beautiful display along the wall. All of which added to the ambiance and got me really excited for my first ever solar flow yoga class.
I had the pleasure of meeting Kim the owner and Catalina the instructor for the class. Kim is an Experienced Registered Yoga Instructor (E-RYT), in the Kripalu tradition with over 2,000 hours of teaching experience. Obviously they are very friendly and even let me capture this great moment before class started.
Then class kicked off! It was a FULL class which made me 100% positive I picked the right place to try solar flow yoga. The class was Open or beginner level and aside from some incorrect hand positions that I needed to correct, the class went really well.
Catalina the instructor always offered variations for movements and also walked around the room to correct form. I needed her help with the Superman style pose. I just could not get my hand correct! Once she helped me straighten it out, I was flying like superman in no time.
I loved the heat of the class. And although it makes you sweat more than normal, it really offers a great change-up from traditional yoga. I felt like it was a day at the spa combined with yoga. I was getting in a great workout yet I left feeling surprisingly refreshed and calm. I can see after just one class how people get hooked on this type of class.
After a day of wrangling toddlers my energy level before this class was pretty nill but 75 minutes later I was a new person! I tried to get a good shot of myself in pose but that wasn’t really working.

Would I recommend this class? Watch the Vlog to find out!
Absolutely! I had a great first experience, I used a couple modified moves which overtime I could develop into full movements. Which would give me room to develop and grow at this level. I love when a class shows you how you can progress and strengthen over time. Also they have a great schedule. This class started at 6pm. They have many times available throughout the week and weekends to accommodate everyone’s busy schedule. I was also excited to hear that they are soon introducing Arial Yoga!
Question of the day: What class type have you always wanted to try?
