Jack White has a funny little tune that says something about I can tell that we are gunna be friends…and that is exactly the tune I was signing as I left Burn City Cross Fit last night!
Burn City is located on Owasco Street in Auburn, NY. I’ve been feeling very anxious about joining a new gym. But the whole point of this series is to not let fear keep you from your fitness goals, sometimes even I need a reminder of this!
I arrived at BurnCity a few minutes early, filled out my form and quickly sat down and was introduced to two other newbies Tiffany and Traci who looked just as nervous as I was. We chatted a little before the class and I was excited to find out Tiffany is training for a half marathon! As the rest of our Ramp-on class arrived the general feeling of the group was a nervous excitement.
I’m a sucker for an inspirational quote and there were plenty to choose from around the facility!
As we waited for our class to begin we got a chance to watch a group WOD (workout of the Day) that was already in session!
Soon after it was our turn to learn. Zach was our instructor and was a lot of fun throughout the workout. He kept it light and fun and gave me the crossfit experience I have been looking for since back in April. A professional instructor who knows you build a base in fundamentals BEFORE you add weight.
Our entire first class was a lesson in proper form. Can you say hallelujah? Learning the proper way to squat is so important to long-term success. I love the way that both Zach and Jamie walked through the entire class and corrected even the smallest form defects. They offered tips and were extremely helpful in form correction and took the time with people to get it right. Lifting weights without a firm base of how you SHOULD be lifting will just lead to injury and I’m so happy that I found a gym that teaches from that belief. Plus walking into a gym like this can be intimidating so learning the fundamental is great way to get people comfortable in their new surroundings.
Even I had form problems that needed to corrected. Proving no matter how long you’ve been doing something there is still room for tips and improvements. One thing I learned is I need to stop staring at the ceiling. I’m not really sure when I started doing that but I always think its weird to make eye contact with people when working out. That’s my takeaway mission to work on. Look forward NOT up!
We started off with a 1″ PVC pipe “bar” to work on how to hold and move the bar. And completed movement after movement with the “bar” to get a feel of how we should be holding the real weighted bar. After front squats, back squats and air squats we moved into some jerk and overhead press movements.
Our class was full and I’m so excited to continue this journey with this group. Our ramp on class is one month-long. That’s right one month to learn the movements, form and basics of Crossfit before you can jump into workouts. Don’t get me wrong though this was a workout, one hour of squats, jerks, and bar work is a workout in itself even without weight!
Everyone left class with a smile on their face looking forward to the next class! Here I am cheezing it up with Zach after class! I love their shirts: It never gets easier, you just get better!
I came home and showed the hubs some of the movements we worked on in class. And laughed when he actually repeated the same thing the trainer said to me about my form in the split jerk. I need to work on keeping my legs closer together I believe both Troy and Jamie said “are you trying to do a split?” Oh Plyo your Mary Catherine’s are ruining my split form- LOL! Another fun takeaway to work on.
I’m excited though because after explaining to my husband the philosophy of BurnCity and the makeup of what we working on he’s considering joining as a great way to get back into lifting! Gasp! Could we actually find a way to workout together again? I’m hopeful.
I’m going to be blogging through my entire experience at BurnCity and I can’t wait to share with you the path from newbie to Crossfitter!
