Last weekend with a group of friends we had the unique opportunity to check out the new what I’m calling live action clue game Breakout Syracuse. Breakout Games have come to Syracuse! I’ve been hearing more and more about these types of events. We had a call at work and people in Buffalo were all about them. I was eager to try it out when Breakout Syracuse contacted me to see if I was interested. Basically you pick your challenge and assemble your team and then you have one hour to “solve” the mystery and escape the room.
Our group chose the Museum Heist challenge and of course we brought with us all the hockey parents to try it out. They have games almost every hour on the hour which is nice for planning!
The staff was great and after we signed some waivers they walked us to the room to being our adventure. Since you are not supposed to take your phone into the room, I don’t have any photos from inside. But I will tell you it took us WAYyyyyy longer than it should have to move into the first room. And after an hour of solving clues, riddles and mysteries to unlock new clues to solve more mysteries…I’m sad to say we didn’t escape the room.
The good part with breakout was that if we got stuck they would offer you tips to keep the mission moving forward. Once we got on a roll and had a better idea of what we were looking for we moved through the clues much better than the 15 minute hold up at the beginning. And although we were cooking with gas in the past 10 minutes we weren’t able to break out of the room.
My advice to any first timers like us: EVERYTHING is a clue!
This was a super fun and different way to bond with friends, turns out none of us will be spies in our next career move but we all brought some fantastic skills to the table.
The Museum Heist was just one of 3 offerings at Breakout Syracuse, I really want to go back and try the Kidnapped and Hostage.
I was really shocked at how challenging this was even with eight of us! I can’t image being a real spy/detective/police officer and trying to solve clues. There were actual answers to these clues and we still struggled.
This was a great team building exercise and of course like any good (or just okay) team we celebrated afterwords with some celebratory drinks and food at nearby Trappers. There was a salad in there somewhere I swear… but the wings were way better 😉 Moderation friends, moderation.
Breakout Syracuse is now open in East Syracuse! Use code “grandopening” for 50% off! Bring your friends, and enjoy the challenge. And new games are coming soon.
Thank you to Breakout Games Syracuse who allowed us to come to opening week and sample their offerings. Check them out here.
