Yesterday was the day to Run for Team Kathy! This was my 4th year running the Breathe Deep CNY 5k which raises money for Lung Cancer! Team Kathy is a team to remember one of my friends Mom, who ironically in the small world we live in was also friends with my husband and a sorority sister of my BFF Amanda!
Every year I say I’m going to make myself a Team Kathy shirt and every year I seem to forget until I get to the event! Then I show up and realize I forgot AGAIN!
I wasn’t really sure what to expect getting into this race. I haven’t been running much and was NOT trained for this event at all. We also may have had a fun evening at the bar last night watching SU beat Stoneybrook and other shenanigans. On a prepared scale of 1-10 I give this race about a 4. It really should get a 3 since I was building my playlist on the way to the event.
My husband and the boys joined me for this event, which NEVER happens. My husband is warming up to the idea of running with me. Yeah! We’ve been run/walking every night with the boys, granted they are not long runs but 1-2 miles is good for him at this point. The boys had fun since they had a kids section with balloon animals and face painting.
This is my husband telling my oldest he should get a sword! He agreed!
I have to say the race went really well for me! It’s a very flat course and is an out and back, 1.55 out and 1.55 back. Mile One I was feeling good. Mile 2 was OK I should have stopped to use the facility since I failed to do that before the race started but I knew I was hitting a good pace and stopping would kill the momentum. Sadly at about mile 3 I had to walk for a spell to collect myself since the overwhelming urge to stop and pee hit me like a ton of bricks. After a walk I convinced myself the fastest way to a bathroom was to cross the finish line! With that in mind I sprinted to the end! I also sprinted PAST the finish line to which a man yelled “you already crossed the finish line!”
Apparently he didn’t realize my true motivation for an all out sprint was to get to the beautiful blue porta-potty just past the finish line
It was a great race with a fantastic cause, I even hit a PR (after 2 kids) time of 32:42. It’s not yet the under 30 minutes I want to be at but every race I’m getting closer and stronger.
Next year I’m going to need to make a Team Kathy shirt! Also I must mention CONGRATULATIONS to the ENTIRE TEAM KATHY for raising the most amount of money for any team! Congrats on all your hard work!
