Now that I’m teaching aqua aerobics again I seem to hear the same thing over and over again from people. Aqua aerobics is for old people. It drives me crazy! Aqua aerobics are an excellent way to get a full body workout without the painful pounding on joints that some workouts have. Sure sometimes my classes skew a little on the older side but EVERYONE can get a great workout in the water regardless of age.
Recently more and more aqua related fitness crazes have been sprouting up and I couldn’t be more excited! I’ve always loved the water. As I used to tell my dad all the time I don’t sweat in the water, or at least I don’t notice it. I’m most at home in a bathing cap and goggles. The smell of chlorine instantly triggers a million memories for me, and I love sharing my passion for the pool with others.
Aqua Cycling is one of the new fads in water aerobics and is becoming popular in large cities across the country. Cycling in the water! Hey Tri athletes I think this has you written ALL OVER IT.
While I have yet to find a place close to me offering this class I really like the idea of it! The water helps protect your joints and the added resistance of the water can help you burn even more calories. Plus you don’t even know your sweating! And it’s not just your legs getting a workout the classes use the bike for arm and ab moves as well!
Another popular aqua class is the H20 Boot Camp started in LA. These classes are NO JOKE. With weights and military style drills coupled with Tabata and sprints these classes are sure to get your heart racing. The first 15 minutes are spent on dry land warming up with core work sure to have you sweating even before you get in the water.
I’ve been incorporating some of their moves into my deep water classes. So again when people tell me it’s for old people the real joke is on them.
Zumba has been a dancing CRAZE for years. Funky music and fresh beats who wouldn’t love it? Now you can take the party to the pool for Aqua Zumba. All the fun of regular Zumba with an increased resistance in the water.
Who doesn’t love a good pool party? These workouts offer a great social atmosphere and help you shake your way to your fitness goals. And for my local readers MANY area Gyms offer these classes! It’s always a good idea to shake up your fitness routine and getting into the water if you are more of a dry land trainer can be the perfect switch up to keep your body guessing!
Sure you can still get in the pool and swim laps but these new workouts add some new dynamics to the pool, keeping your workouts fresh and challenging! There are always deep water and shallow water classes to try as well.
**As always I’m not a doctor and I don’t play one on TV so Always consult with a physician before beginning a new workout routine**
Questions of the Day: Have you tried any of these classes? Are you a lap swimmer or class taker?
